Dear Maven,

I want to know why the catalog states on page 19 that you can use Cranberry Flirtini Home Fragrance Oil in the Scentmate™ but you can’t use it in the ScentIt! Rock Garden. Could you please explain that? Shouldn't all the oils be for every use?

Perplexed by “Optimal Performance”

Dear Perplexed,

I am so glad you asked this question. I, too, have found myself in this same Home Fragrance Oil quandary. When Gold Canyon released more fragrance options of the wonderful Home Fragrance Oils, I was thrilled. After all, a girl can never have too many Home Fragrance Oils!

That got me thinking … How could I clearly explain the “optimal performance” of our Home Fragrance Oils to other fragrance devotees like myself? Then it came to me―an object lesson that could be universally understood by women across North America: Having a personal stockpile of Home Fragrance Oils you love is very much like having a closet full of shoes you love. Yes, you CAN wear your faux crocodile four-inch stilettos with a sun dress, or those new canvas espadrilles with a business suit, but really, SHOULD you?

The same logic can be applied to Home Fragrance Oils. All the options are fabulous, but some work best when combined with a particular fragrance application. How do we know which fragrances work best with the ScentMate or ScentIt! Rock Garden? Gold Canyon’s R & D department conducts rigorous testing on the intensity of each fragrance oil. After logging hours and hours of some serious evaluating, they determined that some Home Fragrance Oils perform best only when used with certain fragrance applications, while others perform well with all applications. The chart found in the catalog page 19 is merely a reference tool to ensure optimal performance of Home Fragrance Oil. When a Home Fragrance Oil achieves optimal performance, it has met Gold Canyon’s strict guidelines for fragrance strength, intensity and character requirements. Think of it as an episode of “What Not to Wear” for your Home Fragrance Oils.

In closing, as we celebrate our freedom this Independence Day, remember this: You are free to use your Home Fragrance Oils with whichever fragrance application you choose! (Just don’t be surprised if you notice that the fragrance strength, intensity and character may not perform as well if you wander outside the guidelines of the Optimal Performance Chart.)

For some, the rules that come with burning candles can be tiring and a nuisance, and as a result, the person just quits burning candles all together. But Gold Canyon had a solution to that, which are our wickless candles!

If you have never tried one of our pod warmers, you are missing out! These are great because they plug in and have a timer on them, so you do not have to remember to turn it off. Simply take your favourite scent pod, take off the lid, and set it on the warmer and you are done. The wax will slowly melt and release the scent for you to enjoy.

Please help! I'm LOVING all of the new Home Fragrance Oils - especially the Scent Blend Duos! But why do I have to have an Oil Adapter? What happens if I just put the oils directly on my current Scent Pod® Warmer?

Oooh! Pouring oil directly on the Pod Warmer is not advised. Why, you ask? Well, let me give you a quick Pod Warmer anatomy lesson: The electrical components are housed below the warming plate. The plate is NOT sealed, so the oil will leak into the unit. This will not only damage the unit, but will also cause danger of electrical shock! We never want to risk severe injury and/or property damage, and pouring Home Fragrance Oil directly onto your Pod Warmer could easily do just that.

The adapter is not only a safe bet, but is of course trés chic and such a great value! Available in three oh-so-neutral colors to suit your favorite Pod Warmer designs, this little wonder is a must-buy for any Scent Blend Duo Diva. Happy blending!

I really wish I could take credit for these cool ideas, but the truth is, I had to hang out with some of the creative gals in Marketing to get the answers to your questions.

Good eye! Yes, those are MyStyle - Chalkboard Doodles that the design team actually cut into thirds and used as place cards in the Straight Votive Glass. I loved the idea as soon as I saw it! The base of the Changing Season’s Holder is actually another piece of the MyStyle - Chalkboard Doodle that was horizontally cut in half to creatively hide the feet of the holder. Oooooh! I see now … you almost forget those feet are there when you see this Look Book display.

Why buy a Pod Warmer?

Have you tried a Gold Canyon pod warmer or heard about one? If not, you are missing out! This is what makes them so great!

Plug in – There is no bulb in these warmers. You plug it in and there is an element that warms up and melts the wax pod

Pods – You do not put the wax directly in the warmer, you put the plastic pod into the well and the element melts the wax which releases the scent. The plastic on the pod is designed not to melt. Pods release scent for at least 20 hours.

Timer – There is a timer on these warmers, so it will run 4, 8 or 12 hours and you do nto have to turn it off. This is a great option!

I’ve noticed some nice updates to the Gold Canyon website and I am loving all the new images. I noticed a new section—Gone But Not Forgotten. What exactly is this page?

I’m glad we’re getting the word out about this page, because it’s one of those “best kept secrets” on Gold Canyon’s website. The “Gone But Not Forgotten” section features overstock items available while supplies last. These are overstock items from previous seasons that are not actively advertised in the catalog, but they are still available to order! But I must emphasize, only while supplies last!

This is the perfect place to search for items your customers are asking for, but you can’t order from your catalog. And don’t worry, these items are first quality, not seconds or defects or anything like that. No fear, you’re still getting top-notch GC quality of course.

The popularity of candles remained steady until the mid-1980s, when interest in candles as decorative items, mood-setters and gifts began to increase notably. Candles were suddenly available in a broad array of sizes, shapes and colors, and consumer interest in scented candles began to escalate.

The 1990s witnessed an unprecedented surge in the popularity of candles, and for the first time in more than a century, new types of candle waxes were being developed. In the U.S., agricultural chemists began to develop soybean wax, a softer and slower burning wax than paraffin. On the other side of the globe, efforts were underway to develop palm wax for use in candles.

Candle History - 19th Century Advances

Most of the major developments impacting contemporary candlemaking occurred during the 19th century. In the 1820s, French chemist Michel Eugene Chevreul discovered how to extract stearic acid from animal fatty acids. This lead to the development of stearin wax, which was hard, durable and burned cleanly. Stearin candles remain popular in Europe today.

In 1834, inventor Joseph Morgan helped to further the modern-day candle industry by developing a machine that allowed for continuous production of molded candles by using a cylinder with a movable piston to eject candles as they solidified. With the introduction of mechanized production, candles became an easily affordable commodity for the masses.

Paraffin wax was introduced in the 1850s, after chemists learned how to efficiently separate the naturally-occurring waxy substance from petroleum and refine it. Odorless and bluish-white in color, paraffin was a boon to candlemaking because it burned cleanly, consistently and was more economical to produce than any other candle fuel. Its only disadvantage was a low melting point. This was soon overcome by adding the harder stearic acid, which had become widely available. With the introduction of the light bulb in 1879, candlemaking began to decline.

Candle History - Colonial Times

Colonial women offered America's first contribution to candlemaking, when they discovered that boiling the grayish-green berries of bayberry bushes produced a sweet-smelling wax that burned cleanly. However, extracting the wax from the bayberries was extremely tedious. As a result, the popularity of bayberry candles soon diminished.

The growth of the whaling industry in the late 18th century brought the first major change in candlemaking since the Middle Ages, when spermaceti -- a wax obtained by crystallizing sperm whale oil -- became available in quantity. Like beeswax, the spermaceti wax did not elicit a repugnant odor when burned, and produced a significantly brighter light. It also was harder than either tallow or beeswax, so it wouldn't soften or bend in the summer heat. Historians note that the first "standard candles" were made from spermaceti wax.

Candle History - Middle Ages

Most early Western cultures relied primarily on candles rendered from animal fat (tallow). A major improvement came in the Middle Ages, when beeswax candles were introduced in Europe. Unlike animal-based tallow, beeswax burned pure and cleanly, without producing a smoky flame. It also emitted a pleasant sweet smell rather than the foul, acrid odor of tallow. Beeswax candles were widely used for church ceremonies, but because they were expensive, few individuals other than the wealthy could afford to burn them in the home.
Tallow candles were the common household candle for Europeans, and by the 13th century, candlemaking had become a guild craft in England and France. The candlemakers (chandlers) went from house to house making candles from the kitchen fats saved for that purpose, or made and sold their own candles from small candle shops.
